Intelligence Report: The 2026 AI Audit Checklist
Standard SEO audits focus on one thing: Ranking. But AI engines don't rank—they Extract. To win citations, your website must be optimized for machine retrieval, not just human clicks. If your technical audit hasn't evolved since 2024, you're missing the signals that actually move the needle.
The 6 High-Impact AI Signals
Prioritize these technical implementations to move from "Invisible" to "Cited":
1. llms.txt
The "Robots.txt" for AI. A plain-text briefing that tells models exactly what your site is and how to cite it.
2. Extraction Schema
FAQ, HowTo, and SpeakableSchema. These provide pre-formatted, attributable "answer chunks" for models.
3. Semantic Completeness
Does the page answer the query fully without requiring a click to another page? AI favors self-contained assets.
4. dateModified Logic
Substantive updates signaled via Schema. Freshness is a primary extraction heuristic.
Why AI Crawlers See Your Site Differently
Google evaluates links and authority. AI evaluates Extractability. A page can have thousands of backlinks and rank #1 on Google, but if the information is trapped in unstructured prose or hidden behind complex JS, it won't be cited by a LLM. The goal is to provide Clean, Structured, and Specific data points.
Technical Implementation: The standalone Header
A simple but powerful fix: Every H2 and H3 must function as a citable claim.
"Overview" -> "Why LLMs Prefer Structured FAQ Schema".
AI engines extract headers as indexable signals; make them speak the answer.
Ramon's Strategic Perspective
This is where I get technical with my clients. We're not just fixing broken links anymore; we're building a 'Machine-Readable Infrastructure.' My favorite 'quick win' is the llms.txt file—it's low effort but high impact because almost no one in the 254 (Kenya) or even globally has implemented it correctly yet. We're turning our websites into structured datasets that AI can cite with absolute confidence. If your audit doesn't include 'Semantic Completeness,' you're auditing for a version of the web that no longer exists.
