    Frequently Asked Questions

    Understanding your Kenya payroll deductions.

    What is PAYE in Kenya?

PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is income tax deducted from your salary by your employer. Kenya uses progressive tax brackets ranging from 10% to 35%. You also receive a Personal Relief of KES 2,400 per month which reduces your tax liability.

What are the new NSSF rates for 2026?

As of February 2026, NSSF contributions are 6% of your gross salary, split into Tier I (up to KES 9,000) and Tier II (KES 9,001 - 108,000). The maximum monthly contribution is KES 6,480. Your employer matches this contribution.

What is SHIF and how did it replace NHIF?

SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund) replaced NHIF in 2024. The contribution rate is 2.75% of your gross salary with a mandatory minimum of KES 300. This provides universal health coverage for you and your dependents.

What is the Affordable Housing Levy?

The Housing Levy is a 1.5% deduction from your gross salary introduced under the Finance Act 2023. Your employer also matches this 1.5%. The levy is an allowable deduction, so it is taken off your pay before PAYE is calculated.
