Question 1

What is deducted from a Kenyan salary in 2026?

Accepted Answer

In order: NSSF (6% employee), the Affordable Housing Levy (1.5%), and SHIF (2.75% of gross). Taxable pay is then gross minus NSSF, housing levy and any pension relief, and PAYE is applied on graduated bands up to 35% above KES 800,000 a month, less the personal relief.

Question 2

Why is my net pay lower than the same gross a year ago?

Accepted Answer

SHIF replaced NHIF at 2.75% of full gross with no upper cap, the Housing Levy is now permanent at 1.5%, and the top PAYE band rises to 35%. Together these push effective deductions higher on the same nominal salary.
